The Amazon Rainforest is a place that is still little explored due to its dense forest and has many stories about lost cities built in gold with giant sculptures such as El Dorado, Paititi , Akakor and Ratanabá, the legendary “capital of the world”.
Many discoveries made in the region, such as great roads, ancient geoglyphs, cave paintings and even an observatory similar to Stonehenge, remain a mystery to researchers who have not yet been able to solve their origins.
One of these mysteries is Harakbut, a human face carved into a stone in the Peruvian Amazon, on the border with the Brazilian state of Acre.
Located in the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve in Madre de Díos, Peru, the enigmatic sculpture is in an area considered sacred by the natives of the tribe that bears the same name as the stone: Harakbut.
The structure was discovered in 1935 and soon became known as “The Mysterious Face of Harakbut”.
The most curious thing is that Harakbut’s face has very strong features, standing out on the cliff, as if a giant was sleeping there, looking into the distance.
The giant face has never been the subject of study by archaeologists who believe it to be a mere natural formation.
The tribes that inhabit the region consider the sculpture sacred, a representative of their gods and protectors, and say that it was Toto, a mythological being, who carved it with a stone ax in the shape of a human face.
According to the testimonies of the Harakbut elders, there are two other larger monolithic faces in the jungle, linked by ancient underground paths.
In 2021, the Ministry of Culture declared the site, called “Casa del Inca”, as Cultural Heritage of the Nation, confirming the presence of the Incas in the Amarakaeri communal reserve, located in the province of Manu.
The place is quite remote and difficult to access, it is necessary to take a 6-hour trip from Puerto Maldonado to the community of Puerto Luz, continue for another day by boat on the river and continue on foot for another day and a half.
