The archaeological wonder created by an ancient civilization thousands of years ago has been shrouded in mystery since its discovery.
Situated in Armenia, the Karahunj site, also known as the Zorats Karer or Armenia’s Stonehenge, is believed to predate England’s Stonehenge by 3,500 years and Egypt’s pyramids by more than 3,000 years.
The purpose of the construction of megalithic stones remains an unsolved enigma by archaeologists.
Theories range from an astronomical observatory to a ceremonial complex, but the lack of historical records leaves room for speculation.
Many of the stones at Karahunj have peculiar holes, which led researchers to hypothesize that the structure was used for astronomical observations thousands of years ago.
The name Karahunj can be translated as “Talking Stones”, in Armenian “kar” means stone and “hunge” or “hoonch” means sound.
This name reflects the unique characteristic of stones that appear to whistle on windy days, a phenomenon attributed to holes prehistorically drilled from different angles.
Several expeditions have explored this ancient site, with more comprehensive studies conducted by Paris Herouni and Elma Parsamyan of Armenia’s Biurakan Observatory.
Herouni suggested that the site functioned as a temple with a large, developed observatory. He also proposed that some of the stones represent the largest star in the constellation Cygnus: Deneb.
Interestingly, some parallels have been drawn between Karahunj and Gobekli Tepe, the oldest stone circle built more than 11,500 years ago in present-day Turkey, reinforcing the theory of the connection with the constellation Cygnus.

Among the numerous stones, some have remarkable carvings on their surfaces, depicting humanoid beings eerily similar to contemporary depictions of the Grey aliens.
Some figures at Karahunj display elongated heads, almond-shaped eyes, and appear to be holding wheeled artifacts, adding more mysteries to this intriguing site.
